Cheap Hotels In Chicago Area
- Does everybody else believe this is excellent? I »
- The Chicago metropolitan area, or Chicagoland, is the metropolitan area associated with the city of Chicago, Illinois in the United States and its suburbs. It is the area that is closely linked to the city through social, economic, and cultural ties.
View from our Hotel in Kyustendil, BG. A smaller town on the west side of the country. Bulgaria across is only about the distance from Chicago to Pittsburgh. Not a very large country. Pretty economically challenged, but the people don't let the poverty get in their way. They are very happy and keep to themselves, very quiet. Our group of about 20 Americans must have looked very foolish because we were so loud sometimes.
This is the town where we stayed for the majority of the trip. Walk a couple of blocks and then we would be at the "Chitalishte," which means "Cultural Center." That's where we practiced every day and had a few concerts. Our other chamber music concerts were held in other cities in other areas, like Sofia (the capital,) Blagoevgrad, Pernik, and a few others I can't think of right now.
I miss this trip so much. It was my first experience abroad. The chance to explore the area and the culture was incomparable. The attitudes and flavor of everyday life were so unique. Next to that, it's not a place that many Americans get to experience because it's not a popular place to travel. Everything is dirt cheap there, though. You could get a full-size meal and a tall beer for the equivalent of $10 American.
Again, this photo is from pretty much the first day there... I'm going to try to fill in the rest of the days, too. I'd love to share them with you. I went for more natural tones in this photo since there were some complaints about my last one I posted.
Tell me what you think!

Former home of the Pacific Garden Mission - Chicago, IL - 2002
Taken by my daughter Tina, 646 S. State Street, Chicago, Illinois - 2002
The Pacific Garden Mission is the oldest, continuously-operating, rescue mission in the country. The historical record features the names of many great men and women of faith, such as Billy Sunday, Mel Trotter, D.L. Moody, Tom Mackey, Robert Atchison, John R. Rice and William McCarrell. It is our desire to remain faithful to God's Word and obedient to His will as were those who have gone before.
...On January 30, 1923, due to the shifting of the hobo jungle, God brought Pacific Garden Mission to 646 South State Street. This area of Chicago, just south of the loop, was referred to as "Murderer's Row" because so many people had been killed there in recent years. Some 5,000 men flopped nightly in cheap hotels along the Row. Satan peddled his wares in the most brazen manner imaginable. The Mission found its new home, in the center of Satan's stronghold, in a three-story building that had formerly housed the notorious "White House", a den of drink and sex. Here, men would be offered overnight accommodations, as well as food.
In 2010 PGM vacated the State Street location they occupied for 87 years moving to their new home at 1458 S. Canal Street, Chicago IL 60607
